Red House Painters, a cult-band, has become one of 4AD’s most enduring bands in the years since their debut. During their time on the label, they've recorded a series of records which have helped define the label. This April 21st, 4AD is set to release a box set of their first four albums, Down Colorful Hill, Red House Painters (Rollercoaster), Ocean Beach and Bridge.
Drop: a reverb-drenched six-song debut
Red House Painters had only been formed one year before their debut album, 'Drop'. This six-song LP was full of reverb and reminded me of an early C100 Memorex cassette. The songs were a bit choppy, but they had a good feel to them and Mark Kozelek's vocals were clear and uncluttered.
Their reverb-soaked, tremolo-drenched guitars were often reminiscent if Neil Young. There was also a strong tendency to cover classic songs. However Kozelek also had original material, which wasn't always easy to find. He also covered John Denver's "Take Me Home" and Simon and Garfunkel's "I Am A Rock" on his 1993 album Rollercoaster.
'Moments’: A more pastoral approach
The next album, 'Ocean Beach', featured a folk-influenced approach to music. The band's early albums didn't feature long, droning epics. Instead, there are more melodies and lyrical narratives than ever before. It was the last album with Gorden Mack, the founding guitarist. This album saw Kozelek & the band shift towards a radio-friendly sound. Songs like 'Summer Dress" and San Geronimo featured more upbeat lyrics. The album's covers for 'Long Distance Runaround’ by Yes and ‘Drop’ by Fleetwood Mac are more relaxed than their earlier work.

Although they had covered many classic rock songs over the years, 'Long Distance Runaround" was their first acoustic version. This is not their best cover but it's a solid one that Kozelek uses to break out of his shell, delivering better songs and melodies.
"Ocean Beach" is a more introspective approach
Kozelek, the Red House Painters and Ocean Beach took a folk-influenced musical approach. The songs on Ocean Beach are shorter and more intimate than their early albums.
